We're making progress! All four pieces of our future closet are now in the house where they will complete their drying. Here are a few shots to update you...
COVID Hair Jim carving the first of four pieces. This versatile cradle allowed Jim to work at odd angles without killing his body. Due to back issues, he has to limit how long he carves at one time. He loves carving and putters away on it as he can. It's looking good!
Jim looks a lot happier since his hair cut plus he loves seeing and feeling the texture of the cedar. Gone are the COVID locks, thank goodness! I love the shorter hair ...and so does he.
This is the inside of the closet. You can see that it's smooth, pretty flat and carved out also. All four pieces will have the same look on the inside. The natural air circulation will be provided through the carved out knot holes.
Piece #1 is standing in place til it's time for a dry fitting.
Jim moved back to the tent to finish preparation on Piece # 2. You gotta have the rights tools for the job!
Piece #2 was moved into the house via "Red" our handy dandy cart. Jim stood it up next to the shrouded Piece #1. Want to keep the sun off all the pieces.
Piece #3 on the move. What would we do without Red! Just add a couple of pieces of 2 x 4 across the box and it's ready to take on long lengths of wood. It's been so useful over and over and over!
We rolled Red right into the house then Jim carefully moved it onto a couple of 'feet' he had screwed to the bottom. He walked it over and secured it in front of the other two.
Piece #4....this was November 2019 when we first hauled the four pieces of log home.
Jim did the initial grinding outside then continued sanding in the tent, where it dried for 1.5 years.
Piece #4 is in the house! We set it on the table til after Labour Day then put it on the cradle so Jim could start carving.
Carving has begun, chip by chip. He keeps his chisels razor sharp as it makes the work a lot easier.
Jim fine tuned the back while it was in the tent. He had to add a little triangle backing to the inside to give extra strength where needed. Once Piece #4 was out of the tent we cleaned it up so it could accommodate some of our new appliances, our three rain barrels, a large assortment of boards plus garden tools and hand lawn mowers. What would we do without the tent!
Piece #4 is in the cradle and Jim's about to start carving. However, we had to take the workbench apart to retrieve cedar boards and shiplap stored underneath. Of course, the expansive space was quickly consumed by the workbench again. The boards removed were then planed and cut to specifications.
Nothing like the late afternoon sun to show off a pice of art in progress.
Once Jim's finished carving this wonderful piece of wood, it'll be stood up with the other three. Jim still has a lot of carving left to do on the others but there's only one way forward...Chip by chip.
But wait!!!! We have the two rounds left over from Tree to Closet.
Stay tuned as Jim starts changing them into an entry bench and our future coffee table. ...
Until next time.
Jim and Tricia Bowen
