Our First Spring on Malcolm Island.

What crazy weather we had in February and part of March.  Day after day of blue skies and cold temperatures.  Cold for us, that is!  Things have warmed up beautifully and we need rain now!

If the day is clear on a Sunday then we like to explore Malcolm Island and are always blown away by the beauty.  Seasons are advancing; as grasses pop up and buds pop out we have the addition of evening fog rolling by, tinged by pink skies. Our views are ever changing.
Here are our most recent scenic shots.

A scenic shot of our house.  You can see the cherry tree budding up next to our porch.
The first signs of life on one of two wonderful old cherry trees.
When the ferry leaves Port McNeill it's route to Sointula allows us to catch a glimpse here and there.
Malcolm Island is criss crossed with lots of logging roads.  From time to time on a Sunday afternoon we explore them, usually while we're out looking for trails that lead to the ocean.

Perfect spring weather to explore not only the back roads of our island but also to check out the beach at Mitchell Bay.  The salal was thick and the old road was pretty unused but we managed to meander all the way to the far end of the Island, popping out just as the main gravel road descended into Mitchel Bay.  The half tide beach was warm as we watched a logging truck prepare to drop its load into the boom grounds for sorting.   Little traffic passed while we explored this different beach.  We found a few more unusual boulders to add to our diverse collection.  One day our pile of amazing rocks will become part of our homey hearth.  Rocks and Trees again.
Late day sun dappling the forest.
The start of a puff ball nestled in the crutch of an evergreen.
Yes this is the road.
Yes we barely clear the salal on both sides of the truck.

Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
On our way home we spotted one of the famous dinosaurs of Malcolm Island.   We spot them from time to time.
Notice that some kind stranger has replaced a missing hand with a lovely glove.  How thoughtful!
This one patrols the main road that runs from Mitchell Bay to the village.

Enjoy spring wherever you are.

Until next time...
